Hello!! Below you'll find a free wet felting tutorial to make a easter egg that is hollow!! Fun to use for easter treats, preschool play, circle times in daycare, a felt toy, easter decor and more!!
There is a Learn to Felt KIT for this tutorial on my website as well. It is available for purchase. The kit comes with the color photo instructions, and materials such as wool, thread, needle, plastic egg and netting.
But here is the free verison!!!!! Enjoy!!!! Wet felting is a fun activity to do with all ages. A fun homeschool craft too.
You will need: a color wool for the egg, similar colored thread, a sewing needle, a piece of netting and a plastic egg. You will also need your own dish soap or olive oil soap, a bowl, kettle, rubber gloves if desired, scissor or box cutter, a towel and bubble wrap if desired. TIP* When working with hot or boiling water (especially with kids), the rubber gloves come in handy!
Let’s make an Easter Egg!

1. To start, gather any materials you need as described above. You want to be by a sink for this craft! Lay out your towel and bubble wrap if you want to use any. It is just another way to agitate the wool. The basic action of this craft is agitating the wool fibres with hot and cold water and friction!
2. & 3. Take the wool you are using and begin wrapping it as tightly as you can around the plastic egg. Wrap until all the plastic underneath is covered well. You don’t want it too thin. Thicker is better here! You can add more later if needed once you get the egg wet too.
4. Take the netting and wrap it around the egg. Carefully so the wool doesn’t all fall off.
5. Either boil a kettle of hot water and put it in a bowl to dunk your egg in or using running hot water from the tap (like pictured).

BOILING WATER IN KETTLE METHOD: Take 2 bowls, one of hot water and one of cold water. Alternate dunking the egg in hot and cold water. Rubbing the egg each time. Add some soap onto the egg or into the water. Rub the egg and dunk in the water until firmly felted, maybe 10-20 mins!
TAP METHOD CONTINED BELOW!
6. Turn the tap to hot water and soak the egg. Make sure the netting is wrapped tight around the egg. Rub the egg gently at first. The fibres will be loose and move easily. The more you rub and wet it, the firmer it will become and the more vigorous you can rub! Add soap as your soaking and rubbing to help agitate the wool.

7. Switch between using hot tap water and cold tap water. Do this for 10-15 mins alternating the temperatures, rubbing with your hands, rubbing on the bubble wrap and soaping. The water doesn’t have to be running the whole time. Soak the egg, then turn off the water. Rub and squish the water into the wool.
8. Once felted firmly, rinse the egg with cold water and remove the netting. Let dry for a day or 2.
9. SEWING THE EDGING! Once the egg is dry, cut the middle of the egg with scissors or a box cutter CAREFULLY* The edges will look messy. This is where the sewing of the edges comes in. It adds a finished look.

10. Using the thread, thread your needle and using a blanket stitch to stitch around the edge of the egg like shown. You can add a chocolate, toy or whatever you like inside for an easter surprise! Or use them for décor!
Happy Felting!!
